Phoenix Metro Area Substation

Project Summary

Saulsbury performed the construction and electrical and instrumentation work for a 500 kV, 1,800 MVA substation in Phoenix. The substation was built on top of 80 acres of farmland. Saulsbury coordinated both site engineering and site development.

Installation included:

  • 3,000 cubic yards of concrete
  • 1 million pounds of steel
  • 8,000 feet of 6-inch schedule 80 tubular bus
  • Three HVB 500 kV dead tank breakers
  • 11 – 230 kV Alstom breakers
  • Eight Alstom 500 kV switches
  • 26 southern states 230 kV center break switches
  • Associated equipment
